Former interim UFC heavyweight champion Cyril Gan shared his thoughts on his upcoming fight against Jon Jones, which will play out for the vacant title vacated by the departing Francis Ngannou.
“I’m still new to MMA, everyone knows that I started mixed martial arts just a few years ago,” the Frenchman told reporters at a press conference in Las Vegas. “When I first started watching MMA, Jon Jones was one of my favorite fighters and he is the greatest fighter of all time – just look at his career. I’m still a young fighter and it’s every young fighter’s dream to fight the greatest so it’s crazy for me.”
“Despite a long downtime, this guy remains an exceptional fighter and I’m really happy to be the first to welcome him into the heavyweight division. He is a wonderful athlete and I am sure that he will prove himself in a new weight category.
Gan also answered the question of whether he regrets that he will not be able to take revenge on Ngannou, whom he lost by unanimous decision in a unification fight a year ago.
“No, I don’t have any regrets about Francis leaving. Perhaps, for the first three days after the defeat, I thought about how to take revenge from him, but after that I forgot about it and moved on. I don’t know what Francis has in mind, I don’t know his plan, but I have seen him try to pressure the UFC and Dana White by posting other organizations’ uniforms on social media, and also talking about boxing, Tyson Fury. Maybe he wants to move in that direction, I don’t know.”
“Of course, I was a little surprised that he was leaving, because I know some stories about how much the UFC did for him, and probably in this situation it was not the best way to deal with the issue.”
Recall that the fight for the vacant UFC heavyweight championship belt between Jon Jones and Cyril Gan will be the main event of the UFC 285 tournament, which will be held on March 4 in Las Vegas.
