The winner of the long-awaited rematch between Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk, who will split the octagon this weekend at UFC 275 in Singapore, will be the next opponent for current UFC strawweight champion Carla Esparza.
This was announced in an interview with MMA Underground by UFC President Dana White.
“Whoever wins this fight will fight Carla Esparza for the title,” said the head of the organization.
The first fight of the former UFC champions, which took place in March 2020 and ended with the victory of the Chinese woman by a split decision after five rounds, was recognized as the “Fight of the Year” according to the UFC and World MMA Awards.
After that, Joanna Jedrzejczyk did not return to the octagon, and Weili Zhang was twice defeated in title fights with Rose Namajunas, whom she first lost by knockout and then by a split decision.
Carla Esparza, who became the division’s inaugural champion in 2014, regained the title in May of this year by defeating Namajunas in a close five-round split decision.
